The Pacific Karate-Do Institute (PKI) was founded 1974 in Santa Barbara, California by David Krieger Sensei. We are dedicated to transmitting the highest ideals of Karate-Do, both in spirit and technique. David Krieger Sensei began studying karate in Kobe, Japan in 1963 under Master Chojiro Tani, a direct student of Master Kenwa Mabuni the founder of Shito-Ryu Karate. He later co-founded the International Karate Federation in Hawaii. Also a top world tournament competitor, he has written widely on karate spirit and philosophy. PKI is under the direction of John Bartholomay Sensei (Santa Barbara Dojo) and Miguel Villalobos Sensei (Santa Maria Dojo). Villalobos Sensei has been with PKI since the beginning, with Bartholomay Sensei joining PKI in 1975. Villalobos Sensei and Bartholomay Sensei are direct students of Kenzo Mabuni Soke (family head), the son of Master Kenwa Mabuni. They are Shihan’s (licensed instructors), of Seito(pure) Shito-Ryu Karate.

Nippon Karate-Do Kai is headquartered in Osaka, Japan and is the honbu (home dojo) of Kenzo Mabuni Soke. Shito-Ryu USA Karate Do Kai is our organization of karate dojos in the United States, PKI is one of the dojos that represent this organization. Kenzo Mabuni Soke was succeeded by his daughter Soke Tukasa Mabuni our president of Shito-Ryu USA Karate Do Kai, which is the American organization that is part of the Shito-Ryu International Karate Do Kai. The Shito-Ryu International Karate-Do Kai represents all the Seito Shito-Ryu dojos from each country around the world. Soke Tsukasa Mabuni is the current head of Seito Shito-Ryu worldwide.

All PKI dan ranks (black belts) are registered in Japan, and all kyu ranks (color belts) are registered with Shito-Ryu USA Karate Do Kai. This offers students a legitimate rank worldwide.
